Oh boy! We're not even a full 24 hours past the season six finale and we're already being teased about season seven! Joyous occasion! If any of you missed last nights 14 second snippet, here it is.
Yes, they DID say that next season will be the "best season yet." That's good, because I totally trust FOX and their marketing ploys now. What's disconcerting is that while the Executive Producer is talking about re-inventing the show, FOX runs a promo that showcases torture, gun fire, sex and explosions. Talk about being on the same page creatively, eh?
So what exactly are we looking forward to next season? How about we pull up some of the things that WEREN'T answered or left conveniently open-ended this year.
- What Important Thing Was Jack Traded For?
- Brother Palmer's (Wayne) Injury
- The Nadia/Silver Spoon (Doyle) Love Angle
- The Chloe/Morris Love Angle
- The Jack/Marilyn Love Angle
- Audrey Becoming Sane
- What Happened in Denver?
- What Happened to Milo's Bro?
- What Happened to That Guy Who Checked in on Nadia?
- Daddy Bauer, Dead or Alive?
- President Grizzly Logan, Dead or Alive?
- Component, Dead or Alive?
- Josh Bauer, Kim's Brother or Cousin?
- Jack Bauer, Suicidal or Sane?
As you can see, the writers left themselves plenty to choose from for next season. Though, I really think that the show needs to break ground again and go in a different direction.

Speaking of recycled plot points, I realized last night that 24 is, essentially, back at the end of season 4. Jack has lost Audrey and has also walked away from his life with CTU and (presumably) is going underground.
This time, the breaks could be permanent. Jack's scene with Heller does seem to make clear that he's fed up with being used and discarded by his country. Not that this isn't also a recycled theme: we all might recall that this sentiment was much better, and more subtly, expressed in the last scene of season three, with only a look of bitterness crossing his face when Division interrupts his crying in his car.
Intentional or not, putting Jack back at the end of season 4 reads like a tacit admission by the producers that seasons 5 and 6 were the wrong directions for the show. That Emmy notwithstanding, I can't believe they really think 5 is their best effort.
At any rate, maybe there is some hope for seasons 7 and 8.
Where's Jack Bauer going to start Hour 1 of next season on 24?
Co-executive producer Manny Coto says: "Jack [Kiefer Sutherland] starts next season in a very different place than any season so far. Let's put it this way: I wouldn't be surprised if there's no CTU next year. CTU has become almost too comfortable, you know? 'We need to carry out this operation — Chloe, grab Satellite X and get us a feed!' That's gone. We're pulling the rug out from under our characters. It's a pretty radical shift — a totally different context with a totally different villain. There will not be a ticking clock on a nuclear device. We're hewing much closer to real life: tighter, more personal, more difficult for Jack. There may even be a plot thread that doesn't take place on U.S. soil. In a sense, it's a reboot — in location and personnel. We're going to be introducing a new stable of characters, along with a couple of old ones. Jack's not living under an alias. He's found a place he thinks he belongs and a job he enjoys doing that doesn't involve the government. What's also refreshing is the choice of villain: It's not a Muslim terrorist. In fact, it's not a terrorist at all. And the character is fascinating, someone with a supremely dark past who's done something horrific and whose ambition is to regain his stature in the world. I just can't say enough how exciting it is. It's going to be pretty damn cool."
